The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony’s exciting education concert: "Patchwork of Cultures: The Sephardic-Latino Connection” this year is on December 8th, at the Sephardic Temple in Los Angeles, CA. The concert is the culmination of a series of classroom workshops led by LAJS teaching artists in each of the participating schools.
This project builds on a very successful education program that has reached over 11,000 students since its inception.
This program is taught by Los Angeles Jewish Symphony musicians who visit 4th, 5th, and 6th grade student classrooms in both public schools and private Jewish day schools. Students learn about the descendants of Spain, focusing on the similarities between Sephardic Jews and the Latino community by exploring their music and cultural backgrounds.
This program integrates music directly into the students' history lessons. As part of the program, each student creates a work of art to parallel the music .
During the course of the program, the public school students and Jewish day school students interact with each other on a website specifically designed for this program (lajs.homestead.com). Ultimately, they meet each other at the concert, where student artwork is on display for all to see. Together they dance the Mexican Hat Dance and sing along to the music and enjoy the live orchestra.
